Study on the removal of biodegradable NOM from seawater using biofiltration

چکیده
Despite the low biodegradability of seawater NOM, problems associated with biofouling are common in facilities that handle seawater. In this work, a fixed-film aerobic biofilter is proposed as an effective unit for preventing biofouling in such facilities. A packed-bed biofilter with an EBCT = 6 11 min was employed. The results demonstrated that the DOC is reduced by 6% and the BOD7 is reduced up to 15%. The LC-OCD analysis revealed that biofiltration abates the LMW neutrals and biopolymer fractions by 33 and 17%, respectively. However, the fractionation with UF membrane showed that the biofiltration process is able to degrade the more biodegradable compounds that have molecular weights that are greater than 1 kDa and compounds with molecular weights of less than 1 kDa. After biofiltration, the biological activity measured in terms of ATP removal was reduced by 60%. Finally, a test to evaluate the biofilm formation capacity of a water sample revealed reductions of ~94% when comparing biofiltered and non-biofiltered seawater. Therefore, a fixed-film aerobic biofiltration process could be a useful treatment for the removal of biodegradable organic matter from seawater and for improving the water quality in terms of less biofilm formation capacity. * To whom correspondence should be addressed. e-mail: [email protected] tel: +34 934020155; fax: +34 934021291 2

Evaluation of biodegradability of NOM after ozonation.
The major purpose of this study was to develop a simple procedure to describe the kinetics of biodegradation of natural organic matter (NOM) in drinking water and to use this procedure to evaluate changes in the concentration of biodegradable organic matter during ozonation and biotreatment. The proposed approach quantitatively describes the formation and removal of rapidly and slowly biodegrad...
متن کاملCharacterization of natural organic matter from Mediterranean coastal seawater
Natural organic matter (NOM) is a complex mixture of organic compounds present in all fresh water. NOM is usually only roughly characterised through conventional analytical techniques. In this study, advanced analytical techniques such as XAD fractionation, LCOCD, EEM fluorescence and membrane separation have been applied for NOM seawater characterization. Conventional analyses have shown that ...
متن کاملRemoval of natural organic matter from aqueous solutions by electrocoagulation
Natural organic matter (NOM) affects some qualitative parameters of water such as color. In addition, it can deteriorate the performance of water treatment process including coagulation, adsorption, and membranes. NOM also reacts with chlorine in the chlorination process and may form disinfection by-products. The present study was carried out in laboratory-scale in a batch system using a cylind...
متن کاملMussel biofiltration effects on attached bacteria and unicellular eukaryotes in fish-rearing seawater.
Mussel biofiltration is a widely used approach for the mitigation of aquaculture water. In this study, we investigated the effect of mussel biofiltration on the communities of particle-associated bacteria and unicellular eukaryotes in a sea bass aquaculture in southern North Sea. We assessed the planktonic community changes before and after biofiltration based on the diversity of the 16S and 18...

Background and Objective: Natural organic matters (NOM) are known as precursors to disinfection byproducts. As conventional treatment processes cannot get disinfection by-product standards, novel methods have been increasingly applied for the removal of disinfection by-products precursors. The UV/ZnO process is one of the advanced oxidation processes using photocatalytic technology. The present...
